Fatal Sequence The Killer Within eBook Kevin J Tracey

Kevin Tracey, a neurosurgeon, immunologist, and highly regarded scientist, gives an easily understandable account of the medical and scientific "perfect storm" that is severe sepsis, the medical crisis that can descend on patients fighting off even seemingly nonfatal illness or injury. Fatal Sequence is the unforgettable story of Janice, a baby accidently scalded in a kitchen accident. Tracey, who cared for her during weeks in intensive care, vividly illustrates the problems of sepsis with a sensitive voice that renders cutting-edge science human, accessible, and unforgettable.
Fatal Sequence The Killer Within eBook Kevin J Tracey
The first two-thirds is the case history of an infant who had near-whole-body burns, describing her treatment in the burn intensive care unit. Her story illustrates how sepsis and septic shock develop and are treated; there are a number of impressive treatment protocols for burns described, and they are even better today. (But even today, sepsis and shock are still major killers.)I had two major frustrations:
(1) why hasn't anyone used high-dose intravenous Vitamin C to treat sepsis? We know that Vit C is effective in protecting endothelial integrity and helps manage infectious disease, both bacterial and viral. It would seem to be the ideal therapy. Finally in 2010, there is a study "Vitamin C may offer potential life-saving treatment for sepsis". It is incredible that this protocol is obvious to the casual observer, and has been so for over 50 years, but not to any MD treating burns!
(2) The child's burns were kept sterile by using silver sulfadiazine. The problem is that silver is a toxic heavy metal, and this drug slowly infuses silver into the patient. Honey has been studied extensively, is just as or more effective, but is non-toxic. To use silver sulfadiazine instead of honey is unconscionable.
In the end, the child's heart simply stopped beating, even when electrically stimulated, and even though it appeared normal in autopsy. I wonder if the silver from the dressings affected her heart, perhaps aggravated by mercury exposure from the three DTP vaccines she would have received prior to her burns. Heavy metals affect nerve function and are synergistically toxic; she would have received a substantial dose.
The last third of the book is outstanding. It talks about cytokine signals used to coordinate the immune system and the connection between the immune and nervous systems. Kevin's work certainly supports the idea that chronic fatigue may be due to dysregulation of the immune/nervous systems. (Dr Myhill makes a good case in Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: it's mitochondria, not hypochondria! that chronic fatigue is caused by mitochondrial disyfunction, but it could be that the mitochondrial issues are downstream from immune/nervous system dysregulation, or that there are multiple causes.) All fascinating, and helpful for healing.

Fatal Sequence The Killer Within eBook Kevin J Tracey Reviews
Good for the price. But this book actually tries to covers cures for septicemia instead of primarily detailing the actual physical process of the blood infection. But the author does cover how she is trying to find a cure for the body's
reaction to infection, which skills a very high number each year.
what happens when the immune system runs amok. Thank you, Dr. Tracey. I learned so much about medical issues. Excellent.
I loved this book. It might not be good for non dr or medical personal since at times the words can be hard to follow. I enjoyed the story of Janice and how the DR in the story is doing research to try and find a cure for this disease. Really a page turner.
